Residential Land has been supporting the Savitri Waney Charitable Trust for a number of years. The intimately run family trust supports worthy projects across the world, with a focus on curable blindness, mother and child healthcare and water resource development in rural India and Nigeria.
In December we were delighted to receive a personal letter from the trust with details of how our donations were directly making a difference to patients at the Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital in Bihar. The hospital has a target of eradicating curable blindness in Bihar by the year 2020. In the last year the hospital has conducted 55,362 cataract surgeries, of which 41,388 were delivered completely free of charge to the poor. The aim is to increase these numbers each year until the hospital has reached a surgical output of 100,000 surgeries by 2015.
Cataract surgery is a relatively simple operation, taking approximately five to ten minutes. Vision is restored very quickly following the surgery; a patient usually recovers good vision on the second day. It is an extremely emotional experience to witness.
The photo below shows patients who have received sight saving cataract surgeries, with a poster thanking Residential Land CEO Bruce Ritchie for continuing to support the project and the Savitri Trust.
It is an honour to be supporting this wonderful hospital which is literally transforming 1000’s of lives.
