On Thursday 6th December 2012 the Evelina Children’s Hospital held a Gala dinner at the Old Billingsgate. Residential Land are very proud to support this charity and the evening was a huge success raising in excess of £600,000 for vital new equipment .
The original hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in memory of his wife who, along with their baby died during childbirth. In 1948 the hospital became the responsibility of Guy’s hospital due to the formation of the NHS.
The Evelina Children’s Hospital was the first stand-alone children’s hospital to be built in London in over 100 years and everything from the menus to the design of the building were chosen by children. The purpose-built hospital, as it is today at St Thomas’ was completed in 2005 and now nearly 100,000 children are treated every year at the Evelina. The hospital was designed around the needs of children and their families and include themed floors, a conservatory, a gallery, performance space and hospital school, rooms with views, sunlight and fresh air so making their hospital stay as comfortable as possible.
The hospital is furnished with state-of-the-art facilities including an MRI scanner, kidney dialysis unit, three operating theatres and 140 in-patient beds. The Evelina offers a range of specialist services including children’s brain surgery and heart problems. It is also the regional cleft lip and palate centre for south east England. All children born with a cleft lip or cleft palate in Surrey, Kent, Sussex and the southern half of London are referred here.
Around 6,000 children are treated in the paediatric cardiology unit every year with 330 operations performed on heart disease which is present from birth. The renowned doctors and nurses work 24 hours a day, with experts in every field offering the highest level of care to children of all ages.
